A sleep position trainer is a non-invasive device designed to help people who have a breathing problem during sleep that is significantly worse when they lie on their back. This type of device, such as the Night Shift Positional Therapy, focuses on teaching you to sleep in a side or stomach position, preventing the airway from collapsing due to gravity.
Sleep position training is a method of managing sleep-related breathing disorders, such as Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The Night Shift device is a wearable instrument, typically worn around the neck (or optionally on the chest), that utilizes vibration feedback to discourage sleeping on your back.
The device monitors your body position and, when it recognizes you are sleeping on your back, it vibrates with increasing intensity. This vibration gently prompts you to change position without necessarily waking you fully. The vibration feedback does not begin until the first 15 minutes after the device is turned on, allowing you adequate time to fall asleep.
This device is indicated for use by prescription for adult patients with positional OSA and is also used to help reduce or alleviate snoring.
The Night Shift device has demonstrated treatment efficacy in clinical studies for specific groups of patients.
The device is indicated for adult patients with positional OSA whose non-supine apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is less than 20. A study involving 27 patients meeting this criterion showed positive results regarding treatment outcome:
85.2% of the patients (23 out of 27) achieved a greater than 50% decrease in their AHI.
Only 11.1% of the patients (3 out of 27) were deemed non-responders.
This indicates that, for the patients who meet the criteria, the device is generally effective at reducing breathing disturbances by encouraging a shift away from sleeping on the back.
The Night Shift records important information about your sleep, which can be shared with your healthcare provider.
By connecting the device to a computer or a compatible smartphone application (Night Shift Therapy app), you can generate and print reports. These reports monitor several key factors:
Sleeping Position: It monitors how often you are sleeping on your back (supine position) and the effectiveness of the positional feedback.
Sleep Quality: It provides reports to monitor how well you are sleeping.
Snoring Levels: It records how loudly you are snoring.
This detailed data allows your doctor to monitor your response to the positional feedback and assess whether the therapy is successfully reducing breathing issues and snoring related to sleeping on your back.
